Agro Engineering has been taking color and Infrared aerial photographs since 1980. Within the past few years, we've made tremendous advances in this program. With the advent of a new digital multispectral camera system and innovative computer programs, we produce an invaluable service for growers. These major advances enable us to produce and deliver images to the grower within days of the flight or sooner. Additionally, we are able to produce a crop health image which is extremely sensitive to crop vigor.

Because this new system uses GPS tracking and digital, rather than film media, an image product can be rapidly produced and interpreted. This fast turn-around time enables us to identify any problems and assist our clients in correcting them while there is still time to do so.

The multispectral feature of the camera enables it to separately sense green, red and near-Infrared light levels. These different light levels are mathematically manipulated to produce an image that is incredibly sensitive to crop health. This image indicates the amount of vegetative biomass (related to the number, size and layers of leaves), vegetative vigor (related to the thickness of the spongy layer of a leaf), and greenness of the leaves (related to fertility and chlorophyll levels in a leaf). The variation in this crop health index throughout the field shows areas of the healthiest crop and highlights problem areas. With the help of our consultants, efforts can be made to improve problems and increase crop yields and profits.

Aerial photographs help identify:

problems with planters, fertilizer spreaders or chemical application equipment
irrigation system performance and uniformity
plugged nozzles
poorly set corner timers
bad spray patterns or runoff
weed, insect or disease infestations
variable fertility levels due to soil patterns
water quality, water table or soil chemistry problems
results of chemical treatments or on-farm research
acreage of hail or wind damage
acreage of seed lots or trials
irrigated crop acreage for water rights and permanent records
Closed Basin Vegetation Monitoring

Rio Grande River Headwaters Restoration

Willow Creek Flood Control & Restoration

Transmountain Diversion Study

Due to the high resolution, large file size and long download time, we are unable to publish example images online. E-mail Kelley Thompson for a hardcopy of our aerial brochure with images.
