Developer: Colorado State University.
Release: 1976.
Tuber Shape: Oblong to slightly flat.
Eyes: Shallow, few, concentrated toward the bud end.
Skin: Dark, heavy-russeted.
Flesh: White.
Plant: Medium to large and upright vine, determinate type, lavender flowers, moderate root system.
Yield Potential: Medium (350 to 400 cwt/acre).
Specific Gravity: Medium to high (1.085 avg).
Maturity: Medium to late.
Resistances: Moderately resistant to foliar early blight, Verticillium wilt, leafroll virus, leafroll net necrosis, Fusarium dry rot, Rhizoctonia scurf.
Susceptibilites: Overall disease problems are minimal. Virus spread is limited due to low aphid presence. Bacterial ring rot symptoms are not usually visible until 90 days after planting, but will be intense. Susceptibilities include blackleg, common scab, bacterial ring rot, bacterial soft rot, Pythium leak, Phytophthora pink rot, silver scurf PVY, PVX.
Storability: Good long-term sotrage with minimal problems. Heavy netting enable moderate resistance to harvest bruising. Tubers are susceptible to dehydration immediately after harvest and well-humidified storages are essential.
Production Mgmt: Tubers have a medium dormancy, with few eyes (less than 10) that tend to be concentrated near the bud end. Avoid cutting tubers over 8 ounces--blind seed pieces result. Avoid warming seed at 60 degrees F for more than one week prior to cutting. Plant 3 to 4 inches deep in a flat hill or up to 6 inches deep in a peaked hill. Centennial is sensitive to phosphate deficiences and imbalances. Late-season nitrogen applications will delay maturity and can increase tuber shatter bruise problems at harvest. Drought tolerance is moderate to poor due to a limited root system. Excess water can cause enlarged lenticels that remain visible throughout storage and act as entry points for disease organisms. Tubers are set in the middle of the hill with bulking occurring rapidly after mid-season. Vine killing is required in most years. Skin set occurs within 8 to 14 days. Tubers can become large late in the season, careful monitoring is necessary after mid-August.
